Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are often overlooked in office and commercial environments until a critical moment arises. However, they play a vital role in fire safety, offering immediate protection in case of an emergency. The Australian Standard AS 2444 specifies the types and ideal placements of fire extinguishers, acting as a minimum guideline for office, business, or warehouse requirements to meet fire safety certificates.

At Coastal Fire Solutions, our FPA-accredited technicians are trained to help you meet AS 2444 requirements and ensure compliance with AS 1851, the standard governing fire equipment servicing intervals. Our experts conduct essential six-monthly, annual, and five-year servicing to keep your fire extinguishers in peak condition, accounting for environmental factors and extinguisher location. We provide comprehensive fire extinguisher services, from installation and maintenance to safe disposal.

Choosing the Right Fire Extinguisher

In commercial settings, common fire extinguisher types include Dry Powder, CO2, Water, and Foam extinguishers. One of the most versatile options is the 4.5kg ABE extinguisher, favored for its wide-ranging firefighting capabilities. Our technicians can recommend the best extinguisher types and sizes to suit your environment, ensuring each extinguisher is appropriately matched to the fire risks present in your facility. For example, a Water Extinguisher could pose a hazard if used on an electrical fire, so expert guidance is critical to safety.

For specialized needs, we also provide extinguishers suited to specific hazards, like Wet Chemical Extinguishers for cooking oil fires in kitchens. These are designed to cool burning oil and create a barrier between the oil and oxygen, effectively extinguishing the fire.

Compliance and Placement

Ensuring that extinguishers are accessible and strategically placed throughout your building is essential for safety. Our Fire Certifiers assess the unique risks of your site and advise on the best locations for each extinguisher, keeping them easy to access in an emergency. All fire extinguishers have a limited lifespan and require regular testing, replacement, or recharging per AS 1851 standards to ensure reliability.

Staff Training and Preparedness

Equipping your team with knowledge on proper extinguisher use is key to workplace safety. Our training services help staff understand which extinguisher to use, how to aim and discharge it correctly, and when to prioritize evacuation. Regular training empowers your team to respond effectively in a fire emergency.

By choosing Coastal Fire Solutions, you’re ensuring that your workplace is equipped, compliant, and prepared. Support a local business committed to keeping Illawarra’s offices and facilities safe, and let us help you achieve peace of mind with reliable fire protection solutions

A breakdown of classes

  • Class A fires – combustible materials: caused by flammable solids, such as wood, paper, and fabric
  • Class B fires – flammable liquids: such as petrol, turpentine or paint
  • Class C fires – flammable gases: like hydrogen, butane or methane
  • Class D fires – combustible metals: chemicals such as magnesium, aluminium or potassium
  • Class E fires – electrical equipment
  • Class F fires – cooking oils: typically a chip-pan fire

The numbers and letters on a fire extinguisher label indicate how effective the extinguisher is for certain types of fires and what types of fires it is meant to put out. Here’s a breakdown of what each part means:

Example: 4A:60B(E)

  1. The Class A Rating (e.g., 4A)
    • "A" fires involve ordinary materials like wood, paper, or fabric.
    • The number before "A" (in this case, "4") shows the extinguisher’s strength against Class A fires.
    • The higher the number, the larger the fire it can handle. For example, "4A" would handle twice as much fire as "2A."

  1. The Class B Rating (e.g., 60B)
    • "B" fires involve flammable liquids like oil, gasoline, or paint.
    • The number before "B" (like "60") indicates the size of the liquid fire it can put out, measured in square meters.
    • Higher numbers mean it can tackle larger liquid fires, so "60B" can handle a bigger fire than "40B."

  1. Class E Rating (Electrical Fires)
    • The "(E)" means the extinguisher is safe for electrical fires.
    • There’s no number here; just having "E" means it can safely handle fires involving electrical equipment without causing a shock hazard.

Why These Ratings Matter

These ratings help people choose the right extinguisher based on the type of fire that could happen in an area and the size of fire it could handle. For example, an extinguisher labeled 4A:60B(E) is suitable for:

  • Larger fires involving wood or paper (4A)
  • Moderate-sized flammable liquid fires (60B)
  • Electrical fires (E)

Each rating ensures that the extinguisher will be effective if a fire occurs, making it easier to control the fire safely.

Different types of fire extinguishers are designed for specific fire hazards. For example, water extinguishers are best for fires involving wood or paper, but should never be used on electrical fires. CO2 extinguishers are effective for electrical fires, while dry powder extinguishers work well on flammable liquids and gases. Knowing the types of fires in your environment helps you choose the right extinguisher to ensure safety and effectiveness.
